A trip to see the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead at the British Museum a few years ago completely blew me away, and I was particularly taken with the curious scarab amulets. These artefacts were painstakingly made by hand, and were placed within the mummy in specific places to aid the journey to the afterlife. This wonder and awe that I experienced greatly inspired my solo show, Stirring the Swarm, back in 2011. These scarab beetles are very special to me because of this connection. In this design of beetle the scarabs have been fused with butterflies to create a magical cross species.
